He said he wanted a target man and Gills manager Mark Stimson has finally landed his man, in the form of former Doncaster Rovers striker Mark McCammon.
Supposedly he's the League One striker we were chasing all summer, so I guess I should be pleased that we've managed to secure the services of our manager's chosen target man.
So why am I - and other Gills fans I've spoken to - left feeling distinctly underwhelmed?
It's not McCammon's fault. After all, he played a significant role in Doncaster Rovers' promotion season last year. But he's never really been a goalscoring striker, and that's what I think we need.
I was hoping we'd bring in a player to help not only create goals for Simeon Jackson, but also to shoulder the burden of goalscoring up front. While I'm sure McCammon will provide a few knock-downs for Jackson to score from this season, I'm far from convinced by the new man's scoring record.
In league football he averages goal every 8.33 games, which is far from prolific, and certainly not encouraging.
And if you compare his recent record in front of goal to that of his likely strike partner, it's clear to see where we're expecting the goals to come from next season.fans can expect the goals to come from next season.
Jackson scored more goals last year than McCammon managed in the last FOUR seasons. That makes for a very one-dimensional strike partnership to me. The worry being that if Jackson doesn't score, McCammon's only got a one-in-eight chance of bailing him out by tucking one away himself.
That means we'll need our midfield to weigh in with more than their fair share of goals this season. Both Adam Miller and Andrew Crofts have goals in them, and they'll need to deliver this season if we're serious about bouncing back to League One this term. If Nicky Southall can find his shooting boots too, then we should be more than capable of finding enough goals from midfield to compensate.
If we can get him, Jackson and Adam Miller to form a triumverate to compare with the Mama Sidibe/Marlon King/Paul Shaw trio we had in the Championship, then maybe we'll be in business. But while I'm trying my best to be positive, I can't pretend I'm not disappointed, because I think we could have done better. For example, Stevenage striker Steve Morison and Bristol Rovers' Richard Walker were both available, and either would have been a far better option.
But Stimson was in the market for a big man - and we've certainly got one of those. At six-foot-five, McCammon will cut an imposing figure on the pitch this season. Let's hope he can impose himself on opposition defences and do the business for us, too. Then maybe more fans will get excited by his signing, because right now, it seems the jury's out.
