A number of players have left the club, but thus far we've had no news regarding possible incoming players. Of course it's not sensible to name your transfer targets in advance, but there has been very little from the club to give the fans any news on upcoming developments with the squad.
So far all we know is there are half a dozen senior pros waiting to be offered new contracts - and that these contracts are likely to be at vastly reduced terms in comparison to the players' old deals. However, it seems the players went away when the manager was at the club and now the players are back, the manager's away. According to reports, it is unlikely there will be any comings and goings until next week when Cooper returns from his break.
It's frustrating to see our League One rivals making some pretty decent signings while we seem to be sitting on our hands. The biggest worry for most fans is the possibility that we'll not be able to bring in the players we need, either because we can't attract them to Priestfield, or because other clubs have beaten us to them.
With the lack of official news coming from the club, the rumour mill has started up. We've been linked with Luton's leading goalscorer Steve Howard - and have reportedly offered a better deal to the 29-year-old striker than the one offered by the Hatters - but Burnley are also reported to be interested, with some quarters suggesting he has signed a pre-contract agreement with the Clarets.
Other rumours have suggested Jay McEveley and Jonathan Douglas may return to the Gills next season, possibly on a year-long loan, and the Gills are sure to be linked with one or two Hartlepool United players upon Neale Cooper's return to Priestfield next week. Goalkeeper Jimmy Provett, centre half Chris Westwood, midfielder Jon Daly and striker Adam Boyd are the outstanding players at the club - but transfer fees may be necessary to secure any of those players, which may rule them out.
When Neale Cooper arrived at Priestfield, there was a air of optimism around the club, but a summer of silence has left the fans frustrated and concerned. Hopefully we'll see some activity over the next couple of weeks. When we do, we'll cover it here on Gills365.
