Armstrong mulls over Gills offer

Armstrong, who spent two months on loan at Priestfield back in 1996, is available on a Bosman free transfer, but is considering his options despite being offered a new two-year deal by Cheltenham.

Talking to the Gloucestershire Echo, Armstrong said: "I am tempted and flattered that Gillingham have shown an interest although I am more pulled towards Cheltenham because of John Ward, who is the best manager I have worked for.

"But Gillingham are willing to pay for me to travel and stay down there and I will be speaking to them.

"I'd be in the same situation as I am in with Cheltenham, being away from my family, but I have to consider going where they will pay my rent.

"I will speak to Gillingham then make my mind up over the next week. I don't know what I want to do at the moment because Gillingham is an extra 50 or 60 miles from Nottingham but why should I have to travel two and half hours to work and not get expenses?"

The 32-year-old, who can play on the left of midfield or as a fullback/wingback, would make a handy signing for the Gills following the departures of left-sided players Clint Easton (released) and Danny Jackman (opted for Northampton over Gillingham) earlier this month.

But Armstrong's comments suggest he may be using Gillingham's interest to secure an improved contract at Whaddon Road, where he has so far been commuting at his own expense.  If Cheltenham agree to subsidise his commute, it looks odds-on that the former Huddersfield and Sheffield Wednesday man will stay at Whaddon Road.  If they don't, then Gillingham may be ready to step in.
