At number two...

One name who has already expressed an interest is former Gills skipper Paul Smith. Smudger is currently back at Priestfield on loan from Walsall - and hopes to secure a move back to the Gills in January. He told BBC Radio Kent, "Ronnie has probably got someone in the frame already but we'll have to see.

"The chairman seemed quite positive with regards to Ronnie.

"I'd love the assistant's job, but it depends how much work it'd involve. I want to concentrate on playing."

Andy Hessenthaler
would be another candidate to come from within the club, but there is a feeling that his days at the club may now be numbered.

Other contenders currently on the Gills playing staff could include Mark Saunders and goalkeeping coach Paul Crichton, who is also registered as a player.

But one name, that has surfaced as a fans' choice, belongs to a former player who is no longer plying his trade at Priestfield.

Joe Dunne
is currently at Colchester United, where he is currently working as the Youth Team Manager. We understand he has achieved his UEFA 'A' Coaching License and has been a huge success coaching the youngsters at Layer Road. He considers himself a Gills fan, and still holds Gillingham close to his heart - and would probably jump at the chance at a return to Priestfield as number two to Ronnie Jepson.

Joey was a huge fan favourite at Gillingham, and became a cult hero with the Priestfield supporters, with the Joey Dunne song proving to be one of the most memorable terrace chants ever invented by the old Rainham End. If Joey ever did return to Priestfield, we'd be sure to see a return of the famous Joey Dunne song.

It may be that Ronnie decides he doesn't want or need a dedicated number two working alongside him, in which case, Bobby Paterson and Paul Crichton may be called upon to lend a hand when the need arises.

If any developments arise in this area, we'll bring you the news right here on Gills365.
