Gillingham's Mark Bentley says he feared he had played his last game for the club after his loan move to Blue Square Bet Premier Cambridge United. The 33-year-old midfielder struggled to get back into the Gills side after breaking his foot in October, so opted to join the U's for a month in March.

But he made the most of his second chance in Gills win over Rotherham.

"I'm not going to lie, I thought my time was done. I think I even surprised a few players," he told BBC Radio Kent.

Bentley added: "Obviously I haven't played or been a part of it for a long time now.

"I went to Cambridge and got myself fit and hopefully I've now answered some questions for the gaffer.

"It's been really tough for me the last few months, but I've kept my head together and I've gone out, done everything right.

"I'm determined and hopefully I showed that I do want to be part of this football club."
