Shortly after, Darren Byfield, whose energy and movement impressed for much of the game, smashed a great finish past Marshall to double the Gills' lead.
Just as Gillingham dominated the opening 20 minutes of the half, Millwall dominated the closing 20 minutes, with Barry Hayles netting twice, his first a curling effort past Gillingham's new keeper Tony Bullock, and the second a good finish from a tight angle.
Hayles went on to miss a golden opportunity to claim his hat-trick when he blazed a penalty over the bar just before the hour mark, but in truth it was the Gills who had the better chances during the second half. A number of goal-line clearances thwarted the Gills, and the match ended a 2-2 draw.
Notable player news included a sound defensive display from Danny Jackman at left back and a very shaky display from Richard Rose at right back. Up front, Neale Cooper would have seen a quiet 45 minute appearance from Warren Cunningham, but the gaffer would have been pleased with another lively performance up front from Darren Byfield, who scored his third goal in three pre-season friendlies. Unfortunately the Gills striker got himself involved in an unnecessary scuffle with Alan Dunne and the referee ordered both benches to substitute the pair before they were sent off.
From the reports we've received it was another useful runout for the Gills - and Neale Cooper will hopefully have learnt more about his players in preparation for the new season. Judging by the reports we've received about the right side of our defence, we may see Cooper look to bring in a solid right back before the season's kick off.
