"We had a few (trialists) in last week, and we're getting a few more in this week to have a look at," said the Gills boss.
"The papers are full of stories but we can only look at so many.
"The trouble is, you see them in one training session and they look good, then you see them in a match and they aren't.
"I wish agents would be a bit more honest. They send you players that are just not good enough.
"Everyone knows we've not got a big squad, we've let 10 players go and only signed one, so we desperately need players, but I won't just sign them for the sake of it. But there's still two and a half weeks to go, so there's plenty of time."
Expect to see the Gills boss stepping up his search for players, as the season approaches in less than three weeks' time.
