Gowling told BBC Radio Kent: "I played abroad in Denmark and it look me time to find my feet, it was a bit slower.
"It may take them a while but when they find their feet they will both be excellent players."
Gowling added: "Bruce has been brilliant. For his first game (against Southend) it was a really good performance.
"Stan was at Ajax when he was younger and his ability is unbelievable. He's strong, he's good on the ball. They're great players."
Gowling also urged fans to not worry about Gillingham's problems in front of goal which have seen them score just once in the last five hours of football.
He said: "It will come, it's only eight games in. There's nothing to worry about. People are writing us off already but we are fine with that. We're happy and are going to go on a run."
