Gills expect Akinfenwa to leave

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler says it is unlikely that striker Adebayo Akinfenwa will accept the new contract offered to him.Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent: "There's nothing final with Bayo but he's got options from the league above and that's where he sees himself.

"He's had a good year with us, we've made him an offer and he's looking like he's going to go somewhere else.

"He'll go with our best wishes - he did great for us last year."

If Akinfenwa does turn down his contract, he will join striker Cody McDonald and winger Andy Barcham, who are also leaving Priestfield this summer.

Hessenthaler admitted: "I think if we had got promoted we would have had more chance of keeping these players.

I know we've let out a lot of players but we're not ready to replace that lot

"Barcham is also going to be leaving and again he's got clubs in League One after him and the lad wants to play at the highest level that he can.

"He's also done great for the football club, it's tough for us but we have to move on."

Having released eight players at the end of the season, Hessenthaler is now looking to sign five new faces - with his priority being forwards.

"We looked at our squad and we haven't got enough pace in the team," he said.

"We've obviously got to look at bringing in a couple of strikers and a couple of widemen.

"So there's four and perhaps another centre half that we need - left sided.

"I know we've let out a lot of players but we're not ready to replace that lot.

"We just want to bring in perhaps four or five real quality players. Leaders that can go in with the ones we've already got and we'll have a decent squad next year."
