Gills set for Forest double-header
While there are League One points on offer in the first meeting, the second game is a knockout format, with the winners progressing to the final 24 in the competition, which is open to League One and League Two clubs only.
The competition also has some notable features to encourage attendance and excitement during matches.
The main difference is the decision to scrap extra time, with matches that are drawn after 90 minutes going straight to penalties, which promises excitement galore if matches go into the final quarter of an hour with the scores level.
The other initiative embraces the Football League's 'Fans of the Future' campaign, and states that clubs involved in the competition will offer free tickets to children under the age of 16, who attend the match with a paying adult.
Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney has explained the new initiative, saying, "By offering free tickets for Johnstone's Paint Trophy matches to children under the age of 16, clubs are making a genuine effort to give young fans the chance to experience the thrill of live cup football.
"This competition gives Leagues 1 and 2 clubs an opportunity to enjoy the glory and financial rewards associated with cup success and I hope thousands of young supporters follow their club every step of the way."
Hopefully the initiative will encourage more families and youngsters will get a chance to come along to Priestfield and watch the Gills in action.
