A statement on the official Gillingham FC website confirmed Gorman's departure. Gorman also stated that while the Gillingham job was an attractive one, he was never going to take it.
Speaking to the press after Gillingham's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest, Gorman said, "I came to help Andy and I did not do enough to help him. From day one, I have not come here to take his job.
"I have come here to do the best by the club and I have done that. I just feel that everybody is asking me why I don't go for the job but it is against my nature.
"I am not taking it so I can leave to go off with Glenn Hoddle, it is because of my pride and for myself. I really do not want to hurt Andy and I just felt to be the caretaker-manager after coming here as his assistant and then to take his job would be morally wrong.
"I made a pact with my wife and said I am not coming down here to back-stab Andy. I see it happening too much in football and I don"t like it.
At time of writing, the favourites for the job are Micky Adams and Steve McMahon. While Adams would probably be most fans' first choice for the job, the possible appointment of McMahon has a lot of Gills fans very worried indeed.
We're sure Paul Scally will appoint the best man for the job. The departure of Gorman suggests that the wait for a new manager will not be a long one. the club stated that an announcement on who will take charge of first team affairs will be made later today.
