Headley: Let's back the boys

Jepson: working under "near impossible" conditions
"It's not the easiest time being a Gills fan at the moment," said Simon Head, editor of fan site Gills365.

"The club is financially crippled and the manager appears to be working under near impossible conditions. It seems every effort he makes to bring a player in is thwarted by the club's finances."

During last week's home game with Scunthorpe United, fans booed the team off the field at halftime, and some spent the latter portion of the second half directing their chants at the directors' box, singing "We want Scally out".

"It upset me to hear some of the fans booing the team off at halftime," said Head.

"It was born out of frustration, which we all felt, but I thought the booing was counter-productive. All the players' confidence had gone in the second half. They'd played well in the first half and two individual errors cost us two goals. In a situation like that, the players need to lift their heads, and that's where we as fans need to play a part and let them know we're still right behind them."

Following the match with Scunthorpe, Gills fans have debated the subject of the club and its finances on the various message boards - and the Gills365 site ran an online poll, with 75% of fans voting to give Paul Scally a vote of no confidence. But Head moved to criticise the minority of fans who have personally abused the Gills chairman over the current situation.

"I understand one or two things have been said or written that have been out of order," said Head.

"Criticising the chairman over club issues is one thing, but personal abuse is out of order. Thankfully it's only a minority. The Gillingham fans are passionate about their club, and it's dawning on them that it's quite possible that our club could be in serious danger of going under - and passions are understandably high right now."

While the financial situation is clearly deep-rooted, Head has seen enough positive signs in recent Gills performances to suggest that it wouldn't take a lot for the Gills to turn the corner and start picking up valuable points in the League.

"I completely understand the frustrations with the financial state of the club, but as fans all we can do right now is back the manager and the players and give them the support out there on the pitch. Ronnie Jepson's an honest man and he's standing up to be counted. We as fans need to stand with him and give him and his players all the backing we can, because they're giving it everything under very difficult circumstances."

"Our fans are fantastic, they lend superb support, especially away from home. We need to make sure the players get our full backing so they can play with confidence and without fear. If they do that, there's no reason why they can't turn things around. The gaffer already knows this I'm sure, but if the players go out there and give it 100%, they'll always have the full backing of the fans, win, lose or draw."

Sancho: "refuse to lose" attitude
A prime example of this came during the Scunthorpe game, when Brent Sancho's all-action performance during the final 15 minutes of the game brought the Gills fans to their feet.

"Brent Sancho's attitude on Friday night was absolutely spot-on," said Head.

"Like the fans, he clearly wasn't happy with how things were going, and although I'm sure some might think Brent lost his discipline a bit in that last fifteen minutes, he decided he'd do something about it - and showed that pride, passion and that 'refuse to lose' attitude that the Gillingham fans really appreciate.

"It's that sort of attitude that has taken us so far in previous years, and we sung Brent's name because we could see he really cared. He was prepared to take responsibility and if we can get all eleven players to do that, we'll start picking up results, no question."
