Hess: I'm not stopping yet

Hess: The oldest swinger in town
Hess has been a regular selection in Neale Cooper's starting XI this season, but the Gills boss has used Hess cleverly, substituting the ageing midfielder midway through the second half in each of the matches so far to maintain the high energy levels of the side throughout the match.

Talking to BBC Radio Kent, Hess said, "Who knows when I'll stop! The legs will dictate that, but they're fine now.

"The manager is pleased with the way I've been playing, and I'll keep going until I know it's time to quit.

"There are lots of boys my age still playing - Peter Beagrie and Teddy Sheringham - and I'm still enjoying it. That's the key - enjoyment."

Hess has surprised many fans [including myself - Ed] with his performances this season - and the manager seems to be using him well, substituting him as he begins to run out of gas. His goal, and celebration, against Scunthorpe showed he still has both the energy and the passion to be a valuable squad member this season.

Talking to the official website, he said, "I am enjoying my football at the moment. People keep talking about my age, but I don't think it comes into it if you are fit. Everyone is saying 'When will I pack up?' but my legs are still going and I know I can last the 90 minutes.

"We've had three games in a week and I have played in them all. I think the Gaffer and Ronnie are pleased with what I am doing, and how I am performing. I am playing on the right, which is my preferred position, and as I have said, I am enjoying it."

Talking about his goal, a superb finish after latching onto a Darren Byfield throughball, he said, "I gambled off the challenge. The ball fell kindly, and I was able to get away. I hit it quite well, and it was nice to see it go in.

"It is always nice to score a goal. I was pleased for the fans as it was a long way for them to come and it seemed natural to celebrate with them. I believe I am joint-leading goalscorer at the moment, so that is nice."
