He told BBC Radio Kent: "I know what the fans demand and that is maximum effort from players week-in, week-out and that's what I'm going to bring.
"We need that on a Saturday and everyday of the week during training - that real passion to go out and put the Gills shirt on and get results."
He added: "Our aim is to get back into the first division as soon as possible."
The former Dover Athletic boss was appointed following the departure of Mark Stimson, who left the club by mutual consent after the Gills' relegation to League Two.
"Not winning a game away from home all season was their downfall and that's something that has got to be corrected," said Hessenthaler.
If Hess can bond the team together like he did at Dover then we have only got good times ahead.

"Whether that's a mental issue then who knows? I've got to make sure that come August when the season starts that we hit the ground running.
"There will be people questioning the appointment in terms of going back but I don't look at it that way.
"I look at it as a new start for me even though I know the club through and through.
"I know it's going to be difficult but I've got the right man alongside me in Mark Robson who knows this club and he's a very experienced coach. We're both looking forward to the challenge and can't wait to get going."
Ex-Gillingham captain Barry Ashby believes that his former team-mate is the right man to take the club forward after a disappointing season.
"Since the announcement, interest in the club has gone mad," said Ashby.
"But there is no magic wand. He will turn things around but he must be given time and people should be patient.
"I would expect him to put in place things that will take the club forward. His arrival will most certainly stimulate season ticket sales because I know from the supporters that I've spoken to believe the club is entering a bright, new era."
