Talking to the press about his latest signing, Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler said, "Matt has taken his chance to impress us over the past few weeks.
"He has a lot to learn but I think he has real potential. Now he's got a year to prove that he's worth it.
"We've got a number of options up front, so his chances in the first team are certainly going to be limited.
"He accepts that and is willing to put his effort into the reserve team matches and show that he deserves a longer deal."
Bodkin scored three goals during the Gills pre-season - and will be available for selection for the Gills opening match of the season against Ipswich Town.
