Andy Hessenthaler has said he believes he is a better manager now than he was during his stint as Gillingham boss six years ago.Hessenthaler, 44, is expected to begin talks about a possible return to Priestfield, having left his job as manager of Dover Athletic yesterday.
"When I was at Gillingham before I was still playing. Now I'm just a manager," he told BBC South East today.
"I've learnt a lot over the past five years and I'm a different person."
Despite Hessenthaler's departure from non-league Dover on Thursday, Gillingham chairman Paul Scally says no decision has yet been made about a new manager.
However, he will be discussing it with his vice-chairman in Dubai this weekend.
Hessenthaler, who was Gillingham's player-manager between 2000 and 2004, has been the front-runner for the job ever since Mark Stimson's departure last week.
He made more than 300 appearances for Gillingham in his 10 years at the club and guided them to the highest ever position in the Football League - 11th place in the second tier in the 2002/3 season.
