MacDonald ruled out by Stimson
Many fans expressed the view that, while MacDonald would add attacking options to the Gills squad, he was too similar a player to Simeon Jackson, and that the club instead needed a more physical presence to play alongside Jackson in the Gills attack.
Gills boss Stimson agrees, saying that Gillingham are not the unnamed League Two club currently trying to sign MacDonald.
"It's not me," he told Kent Online.
"He's not the type of player I need and if anything I need someone more physical."
Which could mean another transfer-listed Shrimpers striker, Gary Hooper, could be in the frame, although Hereford United are thought to be favourites to sign the bustling front man after he spent a successful loan spell with the club last season.
