New Gillingham striker Cody McDonald has said he can cope with the pressure of being Simeon Jackson's replacement.Jackson was the Gills top scorer for the past two seasons, but has now gone to Norwich in a swap that sees McDonald move to Priestfield on a year's loan.

"I'm paid to score goals so hopefully I can come here and do that," the 24-year-old told BBC Radio Kent.

"Simeon's going to be a tough player to come here and be compared to, but I'll do my best."

He added: "If I can be anywhere near as good as he was then I'll be pleased with myself."

McDonald did not feature in the Gills friendly on Tuesday because of an ankle injury but he should be back in training on Thursday and could feature against Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

The former Dartford striker has only started five league games for the Canaries since joining in February 2009, but found the net four times in a total of 28 appearances.

His loan move to Priestfield happened very quickly last week following Jackson's switch to Norwich on a two-year deal.

McDonald said: "The day before I signed, I was in Germany with Norwich and the manager [Paul Lambert] pulled me aside and told me what was going on.

I'm a Norwich fan in peace - and I think you've got a real gem in Cody

"They sorted me a flight out and I came straight back because I bit his arm off at the chance to come here and play.

"It's a big club," he added. "I played here last year - it's not far from my home so it makes it a little bit easier for the family as well.

"And I wanted the chance to come here and play a lot of games because I didn't have the chance to play a lot last year. Hopefully I'll score a few goals and get my confidence up and we'll see what happens from there."

McDonald is also good friends with 2009 X-Factor finalist Ollie Murs - they were team-mates at Witham Town during McDonald's non-league days - and he is not ruling out Murs making an appearance at Priestfield this season.

"He said he might come along this year so you might see him," he added.
