More firepower needed - Cooper

Cooper: Wants more quality up front
The gaffer has admitted for the first time that he wants to bolster his forward line before the season kicks off next weekend against Colchester.

The situation regarding Iwan Roberts is still up in the air, with the big striker missing the last two matches with what is reported to be an ear infection. But with his good friend and former teammate Rob Newman taking over the reins at Cambridge United, who are fresh out of administration, Roberts could be on his way to join the Conference side as assistant manager.

Darius Henderson may also still leave the club if a suitable offer were to be received. The Gills number nine handed in a transfer request this summer, only to have it turned down by Cooper, but with one unsettled striker at the club and another looking set to leave for a coaching role, soon the gaffer may only have Darren Byfield remaining from his trio of forwards.

Talking to the Kent Messenger, Cooper said, "We definitely need something more up-front. We’ve had some trialists who on paper are the best players ever – you should read some of the letters we get in, hundreds and hundreds.

"You feel you’re missing out if you don’t have a look at them. They say they’ve been training with personal trainers.

"But you get people in that haven’t kicked a football. That’s not right, we need players that are ready and raring to go.

"Maybe one or two of these agents need to have a serious look at themselves."

Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen a whole host of trialists arrive at Priestfield hoping to earn a contract, but it seems that few have been of the standard Cooper is demanding for his side this season.

With only one week to go before the big kick-off, Cooper will have to move quickly if he is to secure the services of a quality striker in time for the new season. We'll report any developments as we get them
