Nosworthy, who left the Gills as a free agent after the end of the season after working his way through the ranks at Priestfield, has already had talks with the Black Cats over a move to the Stadium of Light.

If successful, Nosworthy will be McCarthy's first signing as Sunderland look to bolster their squad for the upcoming season back in the top-flight.

The report, in today's Mirror, also links Sunderland with Ipswich duo Tommy Miller, who was linked with a move to Priestfield before he joined Ipswich, and 20-goal striker Darren Bent.
