The Scot has impressed manager Ronnie Jepson since arriving to take responsibility for the youth system at the club.

Talking to the KM, Jepson explained, "He took a lot on board last year and he knows the way I want to go, my thoughts on the game and on players."

Paterson is looking forward to his new role, where he will work alongside Jepson and his assistant Mick Docherty.

He said, "I've managed to gain my qualifications and I don't feel that not being a pro has effected me.

"I've tried hard to be a student of the game and attend all the different courses."

That knowledge will be used to the full as the Gills look to mount a promotion challenge this season.
