Gillingham manager Mark Stimson thinks teenage midfielder Jack Payne could be the lynchpin of his side next season. The 18-year-old came off the bench during Saturday's win over Leeds and played out of position at right-back after Barry Fuller broke his nose.
"He's someone who wants to impress and improve and next year he's going to be massive," Stimson told BBC Radio Kent.
"I think the team could really be built around him next year because he really is that good."
Stimson added: "He's got a good head on his shoulders.
"He's got fantastic parents who are level headed as well and know what's required."
Payne made his debut for the Gills against Chester City last October.
He signed his first professional contract in February, which will keep him at Priestfield until the summer of 2011.
