The Football League have asked Gravesend referee Neil Perkin to inspect the Priestfield pitch at 3pm on Tuesday afternoon.
"We're making every effort to try and ensure the game takes place," said Gillingham press officer Murray Evans.
"We're in the middle of a good run at the moment and are expecting a big crowd for the game.
"The pitch is now covered and we've put a lot of sand on it but it is still sodden in places, with one or two particularly bad areas, and there's just nowhere for the water to go.
"We've had a problem with drainage here for quite some time – there's a layer of clay beneath the surface and whenever we have a lot a rain over a prolonged period the pitch gets waterlogged. Ideally you want to put covers over a dry pitch but that just hasn't been possible.
"We're hoping to dig it up during the summer to sort out the problem once and for all – but in the meantime there's not much more we can do.
"It didn't actually rain much here on Friday and Saturday but the damage had already been done with the rain we had over Christmas and that's why we had to call off the Wimbledon game.
"It's now belting down again as I speak and although the forecast isn't too bad for tomorrow (Tuesday) it's supposed to rain heavily again on the day of the game. That's not exactly going to help us either."
