Saddlers sign Smith
Smith opted to leave Priestfield after he was unhappy at the contract offer made to him, but after suggestions of interest from Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday were denied by the clubs concerned, the former Gill had to consider a sideways or backwards move to continue his career.
It seemed he had backtracked somewhat as he was still trying to re-negotiate a deal at Priestfield this week, but he couldn't agree terms with the club and decided to pursue his options elsewhere.
Swindon Town and BristoI Rovers were reportedly interested, but Smith has opted for Walsall - and will add experience to Paul Merson's side in the coming season.
Talking to Walsall's official website, Smith said, "I have been speaking to Gillingham all week but we couldn't agree terms and it was during this time that I was made aware of Walsall's interest.
"I came up here earlier in the week to have a look around and I liked what I saw. It gave me plenty to think about and last night I decided to come here.
"I have been at Gillingham for a while and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club, but the time was right for a new challenge and I am looking forward to it.
"Obviously it is sad to leave behind so many good friends and it was a tough decision for my family and I to make, but I am delighted to be here and can't wait for the season to start.
"I am still good friends with Simon Osborn and he really sold the club to me. This is always a difficult place for away teams to come and I must admit that I haven't got many happy memories of my previous visits to Bescot Stadium, but hopefully that will all change!
"There is plenty of youth and enthusiasm in the side, with a few 'older heads' which all teams need. This is a really open League and I am confident that we will be involved in a promotion challenge. I have been involved in getting out of this League before and will be putting that experience to good use.
"I am glad that I have the security of a two-year deal and my aim is to be back playing in The Championship with Walsall next year. I have played the majority of my footbalI at that level in recent years and I believe that coming here gives me a good opportunity of doing that again.
"I have been most impressed by what the manager and Chairman have had to say about the future and I am just happy to be part of it all."
While many of us are disappointed at the manner of Smith's departure after years of good service, many felt the time was right for him to move on, and we wish him well at his new club.
