ITV's commentator Clive Tyldesley repeatedly referred to him as 'Gillingham's Brent Sancho', which would have made our fans extremely proud, as Sancho made club history by being the first Gills player to play in a World Cup. But in a team which contained 10 heroes, Sancho was one of the stand-out performers - and the pundits and commentators sang his praises accordingly.
Brent earned rave reviews for his performance. He was named as Man of the Match by Talksport radio, and was mentioned in dispatches by Clive Tyldesley and Gareth Southgate during the match. Southgate, the new manager of Middlesbrough and former England international centre half, described Sancho as 'immense', while Sam Allardyce, another Premiership manager who appreciates good defending, said Sancho's performance was 'absolutely terrific'.
Along with Brent, notable mentions have to go to Shaka Hislop, who produced an inspired performance in goal, Luton's Carlos Edwards, who was superb in midfield, Wrexham's Dennis Lawrence, who was also immense alongside Sancho in the middle of the T&T defence, and captain Dwight Yorke, who was a superb influence from his new position just in front of the back four.
After an England performance which failed to stir the passion, the Trinidad & Tobago match proved hugely entertaining for many British fans with ties to the T&T side. One thing's for sure, Gillingham FC and its thousands of fans are very proud of Brent Sancho tonight. He did himself, his country and his club proud. Well done Brent!
