Sancho wants the big guns

Sancho: "Drogba is mincemeat!"
The Trinidad & Tobago international achieved cult status almost immediately upon his arrival on trial. The reports from north of the border, where he plied his trade with Dundee, were very positive and his pre-season outing against Barnet showed much promise.

After assessing his options, Sancho was happy to sign for the Gills and has made himself a fixture in the Gills defence already. Until Tuesday night he'd been deployed at right back, but after an injury to captain Chris Hope, manager Neale Cooper turned to Sancho to take over not just the centre of defence, but the captain's armband too. The result was a superb performance by the Gills number 5 - and there are now strong calls for him to remain in the centre of defence from now on.

Talking to the Trinidad Express, Sancho laughingly said, "I want to draw Chelsea or Manchester United in the next round. That would be it for me. I could retire after that!"

At 28 years of age, Sancho may have been joking about his early retirement, but Tuesday's Carling Cup giantkilling was full justification for his move to England.

"One of the reasons I left Scotland was to play in games like that," he said. "It was a really exciting game and it was all about the opportunity to test yourself against the supposed top players in the world. I think you get a better chance to that in England."

Talking about the match itself, Sancho said, "The pace was real fast but I thought I did okay.

"Dario (Silva) was quick and full of tricks but he didn't like being roughed up. It was a tough game though because things that players in our divisions do in two touches, they do in one. They are also much better running off the ball."

Now Sancho wants to take on the very best - and that means Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side. If he played at centre half again, he'd most likely find himself up against £28million striker Didier Drogba, but Sancho is far from daunted at the prospect.

"I am not worried about Drogba," said Sancho, laughing.

"Drogba is mince meat! It's Robben that I am afraid of!"
