Saunders: 6-month initial deal
Saunders, who missed virtually all of last season with a broken leg, has been given an initial 6-month deal to prove his fitness, while 34-year-old Cox, who was voted the players' player of the year last season, has agreed a one-year deal with the club.

Both players will add considerable experience and commitment to the cause this season as the Gills look to bounce back from relegation from the Championship.

The signing of Saunders will be particularly popular with Gills fans, who view the midfielder as one of, if not THE most committed player on the Gills' books today. His efforts in recovering from injury have not gone unnoticed by Neale Cooper - and the offer of a new deal reflects the fact that Cooper has been impressed with what he's seen of Saundo's attitude so far.

Cox: Signed a one-year contract
In addition to the announcement of Cox and Saunders' new contracts, Paul Scally has also stated that he has offered Paul Smith what the club considers to be an excellent contract offer - and it is now down to last season's captain to decide whether to accept the terms or not.

Rumours suggest Smith may not accept, but with no sign of any interest from elsewhere, Gillingham's offer may be the only one available for Smith. We'll report any developments on his situation as we get it.

Finally, there was no mention of either Barry Ashby or Bertrand Bossu's respective contract situations. Does this mean we have seen Ash and Bertie play their last games in a Gills shirt? If so, the fans will wish the pair the best of luck and thank them for their efforts for the club - particularly Ashby, who's been a major part of our successes in recent seasons.
