Gillingham's new player-coach Nicky Southall has criticised the relationship that previous manager Mark Stimson had with the fans.Stimson released Southall a year ago but the 38-year-old midfielder has been brought back to Priestfield from Dover by new boss Andy Hessenthaler.

"We've got a big job to do at the club - we've got to reconnect again with the fans," Southall told BBC Radio Kent.

"The connection disappeared under the last regime."

He added: "We want to get that back together, get the team spirit going and get players coming in with a smile on their faces again which is what it is all about."

Southall played under Hessanthaler during his first spell as Gillingham boss and then again at Dover last season.
