Speaking to the Stevenage website Chairman Phill Wallace said,

"Mark has resigned today and he's told us that he took legal advise before he made that decision. We don't know where he's going but he obviously feels that this action is in the best interests of his future career and only history will show whether he was right or wrong"

"I think it's been clear to everyone over the past few weeks that events outside the Club have been the major contributor in his decision to resign, but we will have to wait and see what happens now. Scott hasn't resigned and will therefore take the game tomorrow night in the normal way"

He continued "At this moment I don't have any further details but as soon as I have any more information I will let the fans know. We are already receiving applications for the position, as it's obviously a fantastic opportunity for the right person"

It seems likely that this move will pave the way for his appointment at Gillingham.
