The squad's fitness was a major issue last season - and Stimson has brought forward the club's pre-season training in order for his side to hit the ground running when the season kicks off in August.

Eighteen of his first-team squad were at Beechings Cross as the Gills kicked off their pre-season regime with some light fitness work, led by fitness trainer Danny Ellis.

It is expected that the intensity of the training will increase in the coming weeks.

Stimson was pleased to see such a good turnout so early in the summer, telling the KM, "The last time I saw the players they were disappointed but on Tuesday it was nice and lighthearted, and afterwards the players had rosy cheeks and were blowing.

"We had a terrific number. We didn't do anything mad, it was just about getting their bodies in condition, so that in July we can up the ante.

"They were all in reasonable shape and looking good. The next three or four weeks are all about fitness."
