The home side had left the pitch to a chorus of boos at half-time but responded well in the second half and drew level through David Mooney's 60th-minute leveller.
Stimson said: "We knew we were going to be tested as we were playing a very good Charlton side who were obviously hurting from last week's defeat to Millwall, so I was pleasantly surprised to be leading at half-time, especially away from home.
"I'm never happy with a point but to come to a place like The Valley, against a very good side who are third in the league and pushing for promotion, I'll take it."
