He had an 18-year playing career, and his clubs included Tottenham, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southend and Gillingham. His spell at Gillingham was in 1989 and he made 18 appearances whilst on loan.
He moved into management at Grays Athletic in the latter stages of the 2002/03 season. The club finished 2003/04 season in 6th place in the Ryman League, which resulted in them achieving Conference South status for the following season. The 2004/05 season saw Grays win the Conference South division by 23 pts, they also won the FA Trophy the same season. In 2005/06 the club finished 3rd in the Conference at their first attempt, they also gained their second FA Trophy win.
Stimson resigned his position at Grays, and in June 2006 he took the reigns at Stevenage Borough. The club finished the Conference in eighth place. That season also saw Mark Stimson become the first manager to achieve three successive FA Trophy wins.
Stimson was offered a new contract by Stevenage in October, amid speculation that he had been approached by a number of clubs with managerial vacancies. He rejected the new contract and resigned his position on 17th October.
On unveiling Mark Stimson as the new Gillingham manager chairman Paul Scally said, "It's taken a while coming but we've had to be patient because Mark hasn't been available until the last 48 hours for contractual reasons. I think he will be a great manager for Gillingham. He has impressed me hugely and will bring a whole different type of football to the club. In many ways it will be back to basics, Mark has enjoyed some good times and we naturally want the good times to return here to The KRBS Priestfield Stadium. We want the team to play well, score some goals and win football matches."
Stimson said, "I'm very pleased to be here, it's a challenging position and one I'm very much looking forward to. It's a big opportunity for me and one I cannot wait to start. I did pretty well at Grays and then Stevenage, this is a step in the right direction for me. I'm very excited and cannot wait to get to Swansea tomorrow night and get the ball rolling."
Iffy Onuora remains as first team coach.
Gills365 wish Mark every success in his career at Gillingham.
