Wage-structure puts handbrake on team strengthening

Jepson: still looking to strengthen
That's the view of manager Ronnie Jepson, who has seen a number of potential signings move elsewhere.

Talking to the Kent on Sunday newspaper, Jepson said, "We had been talking to a couple of players, but at the end of the day it all came down to money and we couldn't afford the wages they wanted."

Two of the players we are rumoured to have missed out on are Northampton's Josh Low, who joined Leicester City, and Barnsley's Chris Shuker, who signed for Tranmere Rovers.

But despite missing out, Jepson is still scouring the market for potential new recruits as the Gills begin their pre-season preparations.

"Despite the knock-backs, we'll just keep on looking. The problem is that a lot of managers are in the same position as I am - waiting to see who moves where and who becomes available."

Black: Priestfield return still a possibility?
One player who might yet become available is Tommy Black. After Crystal Palace signed former Wolves winger Mark Kennedy, Black could find himself out of new coach Peter Taylor's plans - and a move back to Priestfield may be a possibility.

Black was a huge success on loan at the Gills last season - and he'd be a hugely popular signing if a deal could be agreed.
