We want Maher - Stimson

The Gills boss confirmed his interest in an interview with the Kent Messenger this week, saying: "I am interested in him. He's someone I know and have played with and he's a good football player."

Maher's competitive nature and experience at this level would be a big asset to the Gills' midfield, according to the Gills boss.

"He's won this league and the one below and has been involved in winning teams. He's tasted relegation and so has had a taste of it all."

Despite the story breaking prematurely in the Essex local press, Stimson's comments confirm the club's interest - and the Gills manager suggested that a move could be on the cards as early as this week.

"It's something we might try and do in the next 24, 48 hours," Stimson explained.

"He's someone I would like to bring into the club because he's an experienced player who has good composure and he's not frightened to get on the ball and play. That's the way out for us.

"You need a player who has tasted it and is up for it. That's the two most important ingredients and Kevin is up for it because I do speak to him and see him quite regularly, because he uses the same gym; he goes to work out and I go to eat burgers!"
