After seeing the club steadily decline over the past four seasons, many fans' patience ran out during Saturday's 3-0 reverse against Crewe, with chants of "Scally out", "Stimson out" and "This is embarassing" ringing around Priestfield Stadium.
But while manager Mark Stimson understands the fans' frustration with him and his team, he was quick to defend his under-fire chairman.
Talking to the official club website, Stimson said: "I haven't been here for the 13 years since the chairman took over this football club, but he came in for a bit of criticism today. I don't know why because since the day I arrived here, he has been absolutely fantastic to work with. He is desperate for this club to get back up to where they once were in the Championship.
"I think some of the chants regarding the chairman were very hurtful. Aim them at me, I am the Manager and I know what happens. Don't aim them at the chairman as he has put a lot of time and effort into this club. I'll take it on my shoulders. Keep off the players, keep off the chairman and direct it at me as I know the game."
"It was surprising with regards to the chairman. I have only been here four months and since I have been here, he has been very supportive. I thought I was passionate but there is nobody more passionate than him about what he wants to do and what plans he has got to move the club forward. I think it was harsh but I obviously don't know the history behind it. As I said, in future, aim any grief towards me. I pick the team and I take full responsibility for those players out on the pitch. My shoulders are big enough, I am old enough and I am big enough to take it on board. I'll deal with it. It is going to be a long week but it will be worth waiting for."
