Gills365 League Review: Division One - Week 8

Last updated : 22 February 2007 By Guffie

I suppose we really must start this week's reviews with the player who is on the best run of form at the moment. (This really pains me so very much). Ted Howes won his 5th game in a row this week by beating SymonGills 3-4 away from home. He now moves up to second in the league, just one point off the top spot. If he wins again next week (heaven forbid) he will equal his run of six wins in a row. This is a score he shares with Jagman and has only been beaten by Wiltsgill, who holds the record of seven wins in a row. My reasoning is that no one likes a smart Alec (polite version) and so there will be more people cheering against him next week and his opponent will be trying even harder. To think that the last time these two met they drew 0-0...

Elliott stays top after easily beating MedwayBlue 3-1. The only defeat Mr T has suffered in division one was a 1-2 home defeat to the man of the moment Ted. MedwayBlue on the other hand hasn't won in his last four away games and really needs to sort that out if he wants to finish above mid-table.

The bottom two clubs faced each other as MarkG took on Gillsalltheway. Neither club had won in their last four games. GATW's defensive frailties were soon all too clear as Mark thought all his bithdays had come at once, being able to score almost at will. The end result was an embarrassing 6-2 defeat for GATW. This result still leaves Mark in bottom spot but only by one point from GATW and Baldangel.

Baldangel's poor home form continues as he lost 3-4 to Guffie. He now hasn't had a win in his last seven home games (ever thought of getting a new ground?). Guffie moves into third place and a little warning to everyone, he has now scored more goals than anyone else this season.

When Headley travelled to Zoidy earlier in the season he managed an easy 2-4 victory and with Zoidy's low scoring rate at the moment a pretty similar scoreline was expected. It surprisingly turned out to be a good game with Headley just getting a last minute winner and making it 5-4.

KFG obviously had his mind on his impending nuptials as he played host to hop-a-long Jonhinio who, even with a sore leg, managed to beat the loved up lad 2-3. It didn't help KFG that his future wife was in the ground with her long hair flowing all down her back, none on her head, just all down her back [Guffie's here all week, ladies and gents - Ed]. She kept rolling her eyes at him which was really annoying as he would have to pick them up, wipe them down and give her them back. (The old ones are the best) [That's a matter for debate if you ask me - Ed].

Fred is now starting to inch his way up the league after beating a floundering Jagman 4-3. Jagman won his first four games in a row and was looking good but all of a sudden the wheels have come off and he has not won in his last four games (take note Ted). That's two in a row for Fred. Is he at long last starting to get his season back on track? I hope not, my sadistic side was finding it quite funny watching the Odds and Evens champions struggling at the foot of the table.

WiltsGill sadly also won this week, beating SkoobiBloo at home 3-1. This makes up for the last time they met when Skoobi beat him 4-3. Wilts will be quite thankful that Skoobi only managed to score one goal as he has the worst goals conceded stats in the league but then Skoobi is not exactly renowned for his goalscoring prowess at the moment either.

Trueblue was away to GTAT and was trying to make up for his embarrassing defeat in the west country derby last week. Both players were outstanding. Outstanding in their failure to instill any sort of excitement or urgency in their game. The final score was a very uninspiring 1-1. I've heard of fans leaving before the final whistle but GTAT Park was empty at half time.

Townender never made it this week and enabled MartB to hit the back of the net on numerous occasions. OK maybe not numerous occasions but he did score...once. He scraped through 0-1 against no opposition. Wow. He also has the cheek to accept the three points and move up from 7th to 4th place. The nerve of the man!

Five teams had the Gills down to lose as their banker this week and all, with the exception of MartB, lost their games. Oh deep joy. Serves them right.
