Gillingham's goal is in safe hands

For the first time in a long time, the goalkeeping position at Priestfield looks in safe hands. In recent seasons we've seen loan signings galore as the Gills struggled to find a suitable replacement for the sorely-missed Jason Brown.

It took until last season for the club to find a worthy replacement for Brown, in the form of Simon Royce. The clear choice for fans' player of the year, Royce's outstanding contribution between the sticks made him an instant hero with the Gills fans. He'll be a mainstay in the side this season for sure.

Or will he?

Because, for all his heroics last season, Royce's place in the starting lineup at Bournemouth away on 9th August is far from assured. That's because Stimson has brought in another quality keeper. He's younger, has a growing reputation, has worked with Stimson before and is, according the Gills manager, worth in the region of £150,000. His name is Alan Julian.

Julian was considered the conference's best goalkeeper for the last few seasons, and his former club, Stevenage Borough, has fought off a number of big money offers from potential suitors in the past. When Julian's contract expired in the summer, Stimson pounced and Gillingham now have not one but two quality keepers at the club.

Few fans will have seen Julian in action, so it will be interesting to see their reaction if the former Stevenage man gets the nod ahead of Royce for the season's opening game.

But whoever gets the starting goalkeeper's spot, the Gills goal will be in safe hands.
