Is this a promotion-winning squad?

Gillingham FC have released their new squad numbers for the coming season.

It consists of 24 players, including nine graduates from the club's youth system, one of them being the club's captain, Andrew Crofts. But he's the only home-grown player with any real experience.

There are a few older heads in there - Simon Royce and Nicky Southall have more than 800 career appearances between them - and the likes of Simon King and Mark Bentley know their way around League Two from their spells at Barnet and Southend respectively.

The squad looks young and hungry, which is definitely a positive. The only slight concern is strength in depth.

For example, what happens if John Nutter gets injured or suspended? Chances are we'll have to play a right back out of position or throw in one of the youngsters to plug the gap.

It's a similar story at centre half. The club only has two recognized centre halves with league experience on its books, and that's a worry. Manager Mark Stimson has said Bentley could do a job there, but he'd be playing out of position in a key area of the pitch, which isn't ideal.

One area where we should have few worries is in goal. The goalkeeping position at Gillingham looks particularly strong, with the experienced Simon Royce and the highly-rated Alan Julian set to battle it out for the starting spot.

Up front, we have more options than many might initially believe. Simeon Jackson is the clear number one striker at the club, but there are plenty of players vying to partner him up front. Gary Mulligan is the most experienced option, but his goal record is far from satisfactory and I'd like to think we could find another player capable of contributing more goals and assists from that position.

Other options include the raw, pacy Dennis Oli, or the younger options of Luis Cumbers - who received rave reviews from his work experience spells last season - or Andy Pugh.

We haven't seen much from Pughie so far, thanks largely to injuries just as he looked like working his way into the side. He's got a bit of Teddy Sheringham about him. The way he drops off into "the hole" and looks to play people in impresses me a lot - and he hasn't seemed fazed when he has been thrown on late in games. Hopefully he'll continue to develop physically and become a serious contender for a starting spot this season.

But despite the number of players looking for a starting role up front, one player we are missing is a target man. Oli may be able to play that role, at a push, but that's one area we desperately need to strengthen and Stimson is in the market for a big striker this summer.

The club's official website reported this morning that Stimson is hoping to seal a key striker signing by the end of this week. If he does, then we'll have options up front.

The Gills gaffer also said that rather than simply adding more bodies to his squad, he's looking to add improved quality, which is spot on. We've got a handful of experienced pros, plenty of young players coming through the ranks, plus a core of players who have worked their way up from non-league football. Now all we need is a couple of quality signings to give us a squad capable of challenging at the right end of the table this season.
