Peaks and troughs

Just when it looked like the Gills might be about to embark on a run of consistency…BAM! A 7-0 caning at Shrewsbury followed, and a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Conference champions Aldershot this weekend didn't help matters much either.

The words 'Gillingham', 'Away' and 'Defeat' have occurred in the same sentence all too often in recent seasons, but after a strong showing at Bournemouth on the season's opening day, and a remarkable 2-1 win at Darlington left us wondering if things would be different this time around.

Shrewsbury 7-0 Gillingham and Aldershot 2-1 Gillingham are two reasons why that's probably not the case.

Despite the noticeable drop in quality - League Two is a very poor division in comparison to League One - the team still appear to be struggling to find that consistency that would surely see them residing in the top six or seven places in the table.

After all, despite our patchy form so far, the Gills sit in ninth place in League Two, with ten points from seven matches, so I think it's way too early for people to start hitting the panic button just yet.

Clearly the manager still has a lot of work to do to convince many fans that he's the right man for the job, but I've seen a fair few positive changes since he took over from Ronnie Jepson.

The most important improvement, of course, has to be in the results - and after an OK start to the season, we're all looking for him and the team to kick on as the season progresses.

A win against Port Vale this weekend would be a good start.
