If reports are to be believed, McCammon was targeted last season and after a long waiting game, Mark Stimson finally got his man. McCammon's decision to drop from the Championship all the way down to League Two level was perhaps a strange one, but the compensation of guaranteed first-team football, along with a decent wage for the division, would have helped make his mind up.
But despite dropping two divisions, McCammon has made little impact in the first team so far. His goal against Grimsby is his only strike of the season so far - and despite his hulking physical presence in the side, the six-foot-five striker has looked average at best in the air.
Indeed, the most notable leap made in a Gills shirt so far was the one that saw him crash into Aldershot goalkeeper Nikki Bull and earn him the ban that saw him sit out the last three games.
McCammon clearly must have something about him, as Sean O'Driscoll played him throughout Doncaster Rovers' promotion-winning season last year, but goals don't appear to be one of them. He has averaged a goal every six and a bit games during his career, and averages less than half a season's worth of appearances per year (22), yet Stimson clearly has huge faith that the big man is THE man to lead the line for the Gills. The pace and finishing potential of Simeon Jackson needs service, and McCammon is seen as the man to help provide that service, while taking some of the defensive attention away from his smaller, nippier strike partner.
So far, that combination has failed to click, with only Gary Mulligan providing an effective partner for Jackson thus far, but a lot of time and money was invested in bringing McCammon to the club, and Stimson is bound to give his major summer signing another shot at the starting lineup.
Hopefully McCammon's return from suspension will see him refreshed, fitter and fired up to do the business for the manager who has placed so much faith in him. So far, the fans have seen precious little from McCammon, but with the season now in full swing, the time has come for big striker to prove his worth. If he punches his weight and starts to positively influence the play in games, McCammon can be a major force in League Two this season.
Now's the time for him to step up and deliver.
