Reading the stories in the press and on the club's own website, it seems pretty clear that the Gills are absolutely desperate to sign him. It seems every third Gills story mentions how we're being patient, or how much we like him, or how we're being patient, or how we'd love him to sign, or how we're still being patient, and so on.
But we've been doing this little dance for around three weeks or more - and after all that time, we're still none the wiser.
Throughout that time he's been training with us, and even played 45 minutes in Tuesday night's friendly against Stevenage. Yet despite the clear commitment the management have towards the player, Maher has still to commit himself to us or any other club - and that's a worry.
I've not got a great feeling about the whole situation to be honest. If he really wanted to sign, then surely he would have done so by now. Unless the club haven't offered him anything yet, of course. More of that later.
I can't help thinking that he's about to leg it off to League One - and if you look at it from a financial point of view, you can hardly blame him. But unless he actually WANTS to sign for us, then I'm not so sure I'd entertain his presence at the club any more. After all, it's not a getting-to-know-you approach, as he spent the back-end of last season with us on loan. He knows the management, he knows the club and he knows the vast majority of the players. So what's holding him back?
It could be one of two things.
Either he's waiting to see if he can get a better deal elsewhere, which surely he can. Oldham have reportedly offered him a contract, and they can offer League One football, and probably at least as good a package as we could offer.
Or could it be that he wants to sign, but the club hasn't actually put a deal on the table yet? If we've offered him a deal, surely it's a simple case of him deciding if he wants to sign it or not? According to reports, we were planning to offer him a deal in early July, but it's not clear whether we actually have or not yet.
Personally, I'd like to see us sign him. He hasn't really shone in a Gills shirt yet, but I'm sure he'll prove to be a good player for us if he signs. It may also allow us to sell Andrew Crofts for a sizeable fee this season, rather than keeping him and seeing him leave for a potentially reduced fee (possibly set by tribunal) at the end of his contract, as happened with Matty Jarvis.
One thing's certain. Mark Stimson definitely wants to sign Kevin Maher, but whether the club have been quick enough, or whether the player himself wants to sign, is still open for debate.
I just hope that, whichever way it pans out, the whole matter is resolved soon.
