Maldini: All-time great defender
Blessed with the annoying combination of great ability and movie-star looks, Maldini was destined for stardom the minute he made it into the Italian national team.

A one-club man, Maldini has played his entire career at one club, AC Milan. Since his Serie A debut back in 1985 he has won a staggering seven Scudetto titles and an even more impressive four European Cups. Sadly for Maldini, it has been a story of near misses at international level. Despite making a record 128 appearances for the Azzurri, Maldini hasn’t won a single international trophy for his country.

That blip on his record shouldn’t detract from his qualities as a player. Quite simply the best left-back to ever play the game, Maldini was the best defender on the planet in the nineties, where his combination of strength, pace and ice-cool temperament saw him establish himself as one of the all-time greats.

He’s since retired from the international game, but still leads AC Milan at the highest level of the game in Serie A and in the Champions League, where he is currently attepting to add to his four European Cup wins.
