Looking a little like a slim Danny DeVito, Tostao’s size and appearance led to him being given the nickname ‘the little coin’ by his peers in Brazil. As a player, he was the perfect foil for the great attacking players in the 1970 Brazil World Cup winning side.

His movement, strength and acute awareness of his teammates’ positioning made him almost impossible to mark. While other players in that great side took the plaudits, Tostao’s quiet contribution to that great side made Brazil tick up front. He was a prolific goalscorer in Brazil and is still regarded as one of their greatest ever strikers.
