All-Time Top 50: Number 47 - Dennis Law

Law: 'The King'
His famous goal celebration, one arm raised, with the hand holding the cuff of the shirt, was mimicked by thousands of adoring young fans in parks across England and Scotland. As a striker, he had no peer. He was a poacher of goals, amazingly quick off the mark – and for a relatively small man, one of the best headers of a football you’re ever likely to see.

Law’s passion and loyalty to his favourite club, Manchester United, was best seen later in his career, when he backheeled a goal for Manchester City AGAINST United – a goal that ultimately relegated United from the top flight. Rather than the usual salute. He dropped his head and walked back to the halfway line. He was a City player – and he did his job, but scoring that goal hurt him.

For football fans who saw him play, whether or not they were Manchester United fans, Dennis Law was a legend – and worthy of a place in anyone’s list of all-time greats.
