Book Review: Stan The Man

Last updated : 10 December 2004 By Headley
“This is the extraordinary life story of Stan Ternent, one of the most outrageous managers in professional football. Celebrated for achieving a series of promotions on shoestring budgets, he has coached some of football's biggest names, including Ian Wright, Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise and Gazza. Stan's outspoken attitude and uncompromising behaviour have been legendary within football circles for years. So have his punch-ups. Now, for the first time, the current Burnley manager - called "one of the greatest characters in the game" by the Scot who manages Man United - reveals his amazing exploits from four decades as a football icon.”

Ever wondered who the biggest character in football is? Well, after reading Stan The Man, you can come to only one conclusion. Stan is THE man – no question about it.

Stan’s colourful career has taken him all over the country, from Chelsea in the south all the way up to his spiritual home in Burnley way up north. As a highly-respected football manager, you’d be stunned at the antics Ternent’s been involved in during his career. To say that he calls a spade a spade would be putting it lightly, he doesn’t mince his words – and he certainly doesn’t in his book, which was written during his penultimate season at Burnley.

Stan The Man is written in a style that makes it extremely easy to read and get into. By the end of the first page you'll probably already be laughing. He describes moments from his career with real feeling and all the way through the book you can feel the passion Ternent clearly has for the game – and for winning.

Not a man to stand on ceremony, Stan's approach has always been hard-nosed and head-on. He doesn't suffer fools gladly and there are many stories of how he deals with players who've failed to toe the line. Sometimes his methods result in controversy, (or violence!), but the end result is always the same – Stan Ternent teams do things HIS way – and are more successful than not. Also, his methods and his experience at a number of clubs in his career have helped make him one of the most respected managers in the country.

Gills365 Verdict: ***** 5 STARS
"Stan The Man is a hugely entertaining read. It's laugh-out-loud funny, gives you a real insight into one of the game's real characters – and demonstrates the sort of bloke we now have running the side at Gillingham. Quite simply, Stan IS the man. I can't recommend this book enough, get it now."
