Headley: Now that's what I call football!

Flynn: First-half screamer sealed it for the Gills
The Gills took on a Doncaster side that had destroyed Aston Villa just seven days ago and produced a performance full of fire, commitment and quality, winning by one goal to nil in a thoroughly entertaining match at Priestfield.

The goal came from a good move down the left wing. The ball eventually found its way into the box and was half-cleared only to Michael Flynn on the edge of the area. The Gills midfielder, who'd been out of the side recently lashed a rocket of a shot into the net. It was a finish full of venom, and one that sent the crowd into raptures. Ronnie Jepson's 'new-Gillingham' meant business - and Flynn's piledriver made exactly that point.

Both sides passed the ball very well during the match - and the Gills' new-look lineup saw the team produce some of its best passing football of the season.

Other than the wholesale changes to the personnel, the main difference to the watching fans was the whole attitude of the team. For the first time in a long time, the midfield looked mobile and fluid. The defence was resolute and committed, and the forwards ran their hearts out for the cause. Plus there was a brilliant return for goalkeeper and fan favourite Jason Brown.

Up front, Neil Harris was joined by youth team player Akwasi Fobe-Edusei - and the Gills youngster, making his full debut for the club, produced an impressive performance, working tirelessly and making a real nuisance of himself in the Doncaster defence.

Other notable performers included Andrew Crofts, who looked much happier alongside Michael Flynn in the centre of midfield, and Matty Jarvis, whose first half performance in particular was superb. Jarvis has been criticised recently, but he played extremely well against Doncaster, and worked well, both in defence and attack.

Another change saw Danny Jackman selected at left back, with Tom Williams pushed into a left midfield role. Williams can be a touch inconsistent at times, but his partnership with Jackman on the left showed much promise, and gave us a genuine attacking threat down the left flank.

On the right of defence, Jon Wallis returned from a hamstring injury and performed admirably, linking up well with Matty Jarvis ahead of him.

Jason Brown returned between the sticks - and the difference in the confidence of the players in front of him was clear to see. He also produced a couple of top-class saves to deny Lewis Guy, Paul Heffernan and second-half sub Jonathan Forte.

The match was a well-contested, even affair, with both sides creating plenty of chances - and it was an entertaining game for both sets of fans. Thankfully for the Gills, Flynn's thunderbolt and Jason Brown's triumphant return between the sticks helped the Gills edge it.

Jepson: Made big changes - and got a big result
I have been critical of the team in recent weeks - and justifiably so, but Tuesday night's performance showed the fans that we DO have players who are capable of donning the Gills blue and white and fighting for the cause. Ronnie Jepson's team tonight did everything asked of them - and they deserve great credit.

I called for changes and I called for a change in attitude - and we got both. I was pleasantly surprised and hugely encouraged by the team selection, and delighted with the attitude and performance. The players who weren't up to it were dropped, and their replacements took their chance superbly.

Tuesday night at Priestfield may have been the start of something for Ronnie Jepson. He made big, brave decisions - and they were vindicated with a great win against one of the form teams in the division. Congratulations, and well done Ronnie. Let's hope for more of the same on Saturday. Bring on Port Vale!
