The Danger Men: Walsall

Defender - Paul Boetien

This versatile defender can play anywhere across the back four and is equally at home in midfield.

The 28 year old joined the Saddlers in July 2007 from Derby where he made 126 appearances for the Rams culminating in last season's play off success and promotion to the Championship. He started out at Carlisle before a big money move to Derby in 1999, with the Rams paying £250k to secure his services.

Paul has also had loan spells at Crewe, Notts Country and Chesterfield. The Walsall fans are hoping that his experience will make the Saddlers hard to beat as they look to consolidate in League One this season.

Midfield - Darren Wrack

Like Boetien, Wrack had a spell with Derby which was his first professional club. A handful of appearances for the Rams were enough to convince Grimsby to splash out £100k on the diminutive wide man in 1994. In August 1998 Ray Grayson made his move for Wrack making him one of his first signings.

The talented wide man is popular with players and fans alike and his popularity with the Walsall fans has been cemented by his loyalty to the club, rejecting approaches from other clubs. Wrack's tenure at the Bescot has been hit by injury including a nasty leg break in 2005 which threatened his career. Nevertheless, he made his return just over a year later and as if to illustrate his cult status he scored in the Johnson's Paint Trophy game against Swansea.

Having amassed over 320 games for Walsall, Wrack has scored 49 goals and will be looking for a few more this term in what is his testimonial year.

Striker - Tommy Mooney

Evergreen Tommy Mooney joined the Saddlers in July 2007 from Wycombe. The 36 year old striker has amassed over 700 senior appearances scoring 196 goals at an average of a goal every three and a half games, in a career that spans 16 years and 12 clubs.

Having failed to break into the first team at Aston Villa he dropped down the Leagues to Scarborough scoring 30 goals for the Seadogs in just over 100 games. Southend paid £100k for him in 1993 and he scored 5 goals in 9 starts before being loaned to Watford and joining them permanently at the end of the 1993/94 season.

In seven successful years with the Hornets he played 279 times, including the Premiership and scored 66 goals including 20 in the 2000/01 season. This prompted Birmingham to sign him and his 15 goals helped the Blues to the Premiership. He was loaned to Stoke, Sheffield Utd and Derby before a free transfer move to Swindon in July 2003. He continued his prolific spree at the County Ground scoring 20 goals in 48 games before moving down the road to Oxford scoring 15 goals in 44 games in the 2004/05 season.

A summer move in 2005 to Wycombe saw him score 19 goals and just miss out on promotion. He scored 13 goals last term for the Chairboys and amassing an impressive 32 goals in 99 games during his stay. He declined the chance of a new contract and decided to join Walsall where he has already opened his account for the Saddlers.
