Gareth Taylor took his goals tally for the season to an impressive 17, the best return of his career, as Burnley coasted to a comfortable win.

Defender Drissa Diallo scored the decisive second goal against a Gillingham side who put up the weakest challenge imaginable.

Both Burnley goals came from long throws from teenage winger Matthew O'Neill who might have had a goal or two himself but for some smart goalkeeping late on by veteran Vince Bartram.

Burnley were ahead in the 28th minute when Ian Moore headed across goal for Taylor to turn sweetly and smash home a right-foot shot from ten yards.

Early in the second half Gillingham's defence was again confused by O'Neill's throw and Diallo was left unmarked to head home from six yards out.

Gillingham hardly posed a threat to a Burnley defence superbly marshalled by Graham Branch who has found a new lease of life since moving to centre half.

Burnley manager Stan Ternent said: "I thought it was a fairly decent performance and I don't think anyone could begrudge us the win.

"Gareth has done very well for us and that is shown from the fact that he has scored 17 times and got himself back in the full Welsh squad." Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler, one of seven of the visiting squad unavailable through injury, was refreshingly honest afterwards.

"It was poor. We conceded two silly goals and our performance had a real end of season look about it," he said.

"Times are tough, even painful, but we can't let things just fizzle out and we have got to get things back on track against Bradford City on Monday."
