Defensively, we looked vulnerable from wide areas - and the absence of Nyron Nosworthy and John Hills at fullback was clear for all to see. However, both Chris Hope and Ian Cox turned in excellent, no-nonsense performances, while Steve Banks did well when called upon.
Alan Pouton stood out as the game's best midfielder. His performance, particularly in the second half, was the main reason why the Gills were able to go on and win the game. Alongside him, Andrew Crofts celebrated his new four and a half year deal with a well taken diving header at the Rainham End. He and Pouton, along with Danny Spiller, look like being mainstays in the Gills midfield for seasons to come.
Darren Byfield's performance was sporadic at times, but when he is focused purely on the game, he is very effective. Unfortunately he lets himself drift out of games too easily and often lets his head drop when things aren't going his way. Alongside him, Darius Henderson ran himself into the ground in another tireless display. Home fans were also treated to the home debut of Matt Bodkin, whose appearance from the bench showed great promise, not to mention lightning pace.
Stan Ternent has pulled the side together into a well-organised, cohesive unit - and they are proving to be a very tough side indeed. With other teams dropping points, Gillingham are now within striking distance of a few more of their relegation rivals, while widening the gap between themselves and the bottom two. All in all, a good weekend for the Gills.
