Gills clip Swans' wings

Byfield: Scored from the spot
Both teams started brightly, but the Gills were probably happy to go in at half time level. Both sides had a few chances, but it was the away side dominating towards the end of the first half.

It wasn't long after the restart that Gills took the lead. Matt Jarvis was brought down in the box by Swansea's Keith Lowe, and Darren Byfield stepped up and converted the penalty kick with the help of the crossbar.

Lee Trundle came closest to equalising for the Swans, but Jason Brown pulled off a magnificent save between the sticks to keep the Gills in the lead. But that was the best it got for Trundle who, after getting booked for verbally abusing the officials, was substituted to the jeers of the Priestfield crowd. Then former Gill Tom Williams came on - welcomed by boos from the Priestfield faithful.

After the game Ronnie Jepson praised the Gills fans for their part in the victory. Ronnie said,
“The supporters really got behind them in both halves of the game and was pleasing as they haven't had too much to cheer about this season.” Jepson was also full of praise for strike duo Byfield and Mulligan.

Speaking about Mulligan Jepson said, “He is a young boy who gets about it and I think he sets the tone for everybody else.”

Speaking about the partnership between Mulligan and Byfield Jepson said, “Him (Mulligan) and Byfield from the front were harassing people, closing them down and never giving them time on the ball. I asked Darren earlier this week to get me another 5 more goals and I want him to get 15 goals between now and the end of the season. If he scores next week, I might just put the total up a touch, as that would be smashing.” Jepson also praised Pouton, Sancho, Cox and Jarvis.

The win lifts the Gills into 16th, with 47 points, which is a gap of 4 points between them and Hartlepool in the relegation zone. Gills travel to MK Dons in their next game, who were beaten 3-0 by Forest at the City Ground.
